BOLOGNA – THE ‘LEARNED’ AND THE ‘FAT’ CITY OF ITALY

Bologna is the largest and one of the most prestigious cities of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. From the point of view of population, it is the 7th largest in Italy and is considered as one of the most happening and crucial cultural and artistic center of the country, having a glorious past of art, entertainment, sports and cultures under its belt. Today, Bologna is considered as the home to almost 1 million people.

It has been one of the best cultural hubs. The other university is the Bologna Center of Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). These and many other educational institutions of Bologna have mentors ageless geniuses, giving the nickname “Learned One” or la dotta. The city has also acquired another nickname, the ‘fat one’ or la grassa, due to its world famous extensive cuisines.

Bologna is famous for its wide variety of cuisines. In fact, the culinary tradition has always been one of the other reasons, which Bologna is famous for. Some of the best known Bologna recipes include Bolognese sauce, pork meats like salami, prosciutto, and mortadella. It also has a number of vineyards like Pignoletto dei Colli Bolognesi, Lambrusco di Modena, Sangiovese di Romagna. The famous Bologna desserts include fave dei morti, multi-coloured almond paste cookies, and the likes.

Bologna is also a sporting capital, with basketball and football being the two most popular sports. While the city houses the two most historical basketball clubs – Fortitudo and Virtus, the city is also known for its footballing tradition, with the city’s club Bologna F.C. participating in the Serie B. The city also has a good rugby team.

The city is well connected by air, road and railways with the rest of the country and the world. The city’s main airport, Guglielmo Marconi International Airport, is considered as the 7th busiest airport in Italy in terms of number of passengers.
The Bologna Centrale railway station is also one of the busiest railway stations in entire Europe. Besides, there is a vast network of public and private bus transport system, and with the trolley bus transport system, the place is a heaven for those who would like to spend a few days in this majestic city.
