GRADO – THE MAJESTIC LAGOON WITH A TINGE OF HISTORY

Located in the North Eastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy, Grado is a town as well as fishing center, which is situated on an island, just next to the Peninsula of the Adriatic Sea, between Trieste and Venice. This tiny fishing center, with a population of approximately 9000 inhabitants, is also one of the most popular tourist destinations, and is popular as, “The Sunny Island” or the L'Isola del Sole.

The destination is also world renowned as a spa town, and when considered with Marano Lagunare, the city is the center of Marano-Grado Lagoon, which offers Mother Nature in a pure and virgin form. If you are looking to experience absolutely uncontaminated nature in its purest form, it is Grado and its adjoining areas that should be your next destination.

Though this seaside tourist resort, blessed with untouched, virgin nature and a series of highly-equipped turquoise and, sandy beaches draw a lot of visitors, it is not much well known outside Italy and Austria. The place, with a rich historical background that attracts a lot of Austrian visitors apart from the native Italians, is well connected with the rest of Italy by excellent transportation links. With the Trieste Airport being so close to Grado, and a network of highways connecting the place with the rest of the country, people can easily get to this sea resort with hardly any difficulty. The historical ruins and remains of Aquileia are just 6 miles from Grado. Therefore, for people who would like to enjoy a lot of sunbath, sightseeing, and get a touch of history and archeology, Grado is an excellent destination.

When it comes to visiting places of tourist interests, Grado has a plenty of them. The main tourist attractions of Grado include the main cathedral, the Basilica di Sant'Eufemia or the Duomo. It is, in fact, the best of all the tourist sites. The cathedral is located at the historic Campo dei Patriarchi square at the heart of the city. There is another very attractive 4th century church called the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie, which is full of astonishing medieval sculptures. The historic center or the centro storico is another very important tourist center of the city.

Apart from the historical and archeological assets, Grado is famous for its two pristine beaches. Both the beaches in Grado face the island’s Adriatic side, leading the line of sight up to the Slovenian and Croatian Mountains across the sea. The main beach stretches along the length of the modern town, while the smaller one, known as Spiaggia Costa Azzura is at the other side of the island. Both the beaches are dotted with pine and promenade trees, small to medium hotels and restaurants, bars and shops that offer a wide range of mementos and artifacts to the tourists. The beaches are clean and are equipped with modern amenities that help people bathe, change, take sun baths, and enjoy in their own ways.

Grado is home to a number of beautiful hotels and restaurants, bars and guest houses. People have the leverage of roaming around the city by bicycles, which can be hired from hotels and other places. There are separate cycle paths for them. People can play tennis, enjoy in outdoor as well as indoor swimming pools, spend time in the 18 hole-golf course that the city has, move around and even hire boats and take part in scheduled lagoon excursions.

Getting to Grado is pretty easy. There are regular budget flights from various parts of Italy and some other countries to the Trieste Airport. Besides, there are a number of regular bus services, and train service to the Cervignano railway station, which is nearest to Grado.
