SAN BENEDETTO DEL TRONTO

Sea on land

There’s something special about San Benedetto del Tronto. It might be the simple fact that it has a slightly higher average temperature than its neighbouring cities. Or it might come down to the fact that the boardwalk is flanked by more than 8000 species of palm trees. It could also be its port, having the largest armada of fishing boats in the Adriatic sea. Either way, it has everything that one could possibly ask of a seaside town.

It is a rather large town, with 50000 or so inhabitants. Its hard to judge, as it attracts tourists from all over Europe. That makes it an ideal town for anyone looking for a home away from home, as it provides with so much more than just a beach. There is always something to do or see in San Benedetto del Tronto, not only during summer season.

With this being said: the beach is magnificent, and the town has earned a blue flag from FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) guaranteeing that the water meets their quality standards and that the beach and the marina are kept clean.

One rather spectacular event of the summer season that captures the essence of San Benedetto del Tronto is the Madonna della Marina. On the last Sunday of July each year, the fishing boats form a procession in the harbour, to celebrate the Madonna della Marina and honour the memoiry of those who are lost at sea. This procession continues on land, from the port to the mighty cathedral, and ends in an amazing fireworks display and a great feast of seafood, for which the town is especially famous.

There are no less than five museums dedicated to the sea in San Benedetto del Tronto: “Augusto Capriotti” or the museum of fish, displays more than 9000 species of sea creatures and coprolites; “Museo delle Anfore” is a unique collection amphoras gathered all around the Mediterrenean sea by fishing boats; “Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche” is a permanent exhibition of artefacts related to the life of a seaman; “Antiquarium Truentinum” shows the archaeological findings of the region, which proves the ancient heritage of this seafaring culture; last but not least there the “Museo d'Arte sul Mare” or the Art Gallery of the Sea, which makes up the collection of sculptures raking the boardwalk.

Yes, San Benedetto del Tronto is special. There is simply no way of not falling in love with this bustling town that is half land, half sea.
