Taormina is an ideal destination all year round , thanks to the mild climate and tourist offer oriented to entertainment, relax and fine living.
The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations due to its highly popular sea beaches and picturesque scenic beauty, which is a combination of sea and mountains. The coast offers lovely beaches surrounded by crystal clear waters. The specialty of the beaches in Taormina is that the water content of the Ionian Sea that they overlook, is extremely high, making the beaches some of the saltiest of their kind in the world.
Giardini di Naxos and Mazzarò are the most popular beaches. The beach of Isola Bella , facing Capo Sant'Andrea, is now a protected natural oasis.
As the city is perched along the slope of a mountain, it is also one of the most sought after summer destinations that provide the comfort of the hilly weather, as well as the windy tropical climate of a typical European sea resort. The other attractions of the city include its innumerable shops that dot both the sides of the city streets, with their innumerable artifacts and mementos and other high end designer stuffs, a spectacular ancient theatre constructed by the Greeks, and the overwhelming view of the volcanic Mt. Etna, and the Gulf of Naxos. The streets of Taormina have been preserved in their ancient form, so much so that they still retain that ancient look and feel and that typical medieval flavor and get up. The same can be said about many of the churches and buildings of this tiny city. The ‘Duomo’ that the city houses is not a typical cathedral that we see everywhere, but is a church that is very much Norman-Arab in design and architecture.
One of the most outstanding places in Taormina is the Greek Theater, located in a spectacular location, surrounded by the beautiful nature of this land. It is hard to say if the spectators, nowadays as ages ago, attend to the representations without being fascinated by the beautiful landscape in the background. The Villa Comunale, it is definitely recommended for a walk with its the typical Mediterranean vegetation and a beautiful view on the sea. The city also hosts a string of events of various genres, all throughout the year, especially during the summers. They include the pop and classical music festivals and concerts that are telecasted all throughout Italy, festivals of dance, music and theatre, Taormina Film Festival, and the likes.
The main attractions of the city include Isola Bella, famous natural reserve, which is famous as the “Pearl of the Ionian Sea”, the innumerable antique shops, Corvaja Palace, romantic travestas, Piazza IX Aprile, Palazzo Corvaja, the famous Baroque fountain that was built in the year 1635 and which still works, Church of San Domenico, Anglican Church of Saint George, Chiesa di San Giuseppe, Chiesa di Santa Caterina, Duomo Santa Catarina, Porta Messina, Chiesa Madonna della Rocca, Castello Saraceno, Chiesa di San Pancrazio, Naumachia - Antico Gymnasium romano or the ancient Roman Gymnasium, Torre dell'Orologio, Chiesa Sant'Antonio Abate, Taormina Glass Gallery, Caffe Wunderbar, Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefanoand, and of course the restaurants and bars, the exquisite local cuisines and the famous Italian wines. After a day in the sea or on the beach, the ideal rest is a little shopping in the stores on the main street that sell everything - from pottery to jewelry, from clothing to souvenirs - or a break sitting at an outdoor cafe for a lemon granita served with warm custard or a traditional Sicilian cassata. The food is obviously based on fish: sardines or swordfish in the best Sicilian tradition, but also eggplants, ricotta cheese, olives and everything good that grows under the sun of this land.
