TREMITI ISLANDS – THE TINY HEAVEN ON GLITTERING DARK BLUE SEA

Situated on the Adriatic Sea on the north of Gargano Peninsula, the Isole Tremiti (Tremiti islands) is an archipelago, which constitutes a commune of the Province of Foggia, forming a portion of the famous Gargano National Park.

Tremiti is actually an archipelago of three little islands that are located 36 kilometers off the mainland Italy. All the three islands come up with a perfect backdrop with picturesque ragged cliffs, thick pine forests, sandy beaches – all surrounded by the glittering turquoise sea.

The islands are an epitome of peace and tranquility, though at times they become overcrowded with tourists. Hence, the best option is to visit during the shoulder season if you are in search of quietness and tranquility. During this time, most of the tourist facilities are closed and only the few residents who live here lead their isolated lives.

The majority of the island’s facilities is on the San Domino Island, which is the largest and the greenest of all the three. In fact, the island was used to grow crops. The most spectacular quality of this island is that, it is alternated by sparkling sandy beaches and rugged limestone cliffs, and the inland is more or less covered in thick, lush marquis, which is flecked by foxglove and rosemary. At the very heart of the island, there is a nondescript tiny town that is home to some somber yet beautiful hotels and guest houses.

No cars and other vehicles are allowed on Tremiti. However, that is nothing alarming as the islands are so small that one can easily explore them by foot. There are certain small eco-friendly buses or vehicles that ferry passengers to and from the port to the hotels at the heart of the island. In order to get from one island to the other, there is the option of availing water taxis and organized boat tours, which take the tourists to all the main coves and other places of tourist attractions in and around Tremiti. Tourists can also rent small motor boats, which are locally called Gommone.

The main attraction of the islands is, of course, its beaches! They are simply awesome, with variety of colors of sand, pebbles of various sizes, shapes and colors and huge rocky stretches. The beaches are abuzz with a lot of activities during the main tourist time, which is around the months of July and August. If you are to get the glimpse of the laid back life of the island, avoid these two months. Although there are 500 local residents in the islands, only 50 stay all round the year.

Another thing that you should never miss is the local cuisines, dominated by seafood. In fact, seafood is always the top of the favorite list in Tremiti. There is the classic spaghetti allo scoglio, which is a combination of shellfish and spaghetti. Then there are the capers, which grow abundantly all over the islands and are one of the favorite edibles here.
