TRENTO – THE MELTING POT OF THE ITALIAN CULTURES

Situated in the valley of the Adige River, Trento, is the Capital City of Trentino, which is an Italian autonomous province in the far north of the country. The city today is one of the most important educational, financial, political as well as scientific hubs of the country. Especially when it comes to education, the city, being the home of the coveted University of Trento, is one of the most important ones in Italy.

It is also home to one of the most fascinating and picturesque hubs of Renaissance and Medieval period, and the ancient monuments, buildings and architecture supports that claim to the fullest. With fascinating medieval buildings like Trento Cathedral and Castello del Buonconsiglio, the city is truly a heaven for those in search of history, tradition and culture.

From the geographical point of view, Trento encircles the city center and a number of suburbs, each of which vary remarkably from the other in terms of geography, culture, tradition and number of inhabitants. Each of these suburbs has their own traditional identity that is unique and is very much rural or mountainous in look and feel.

The economic prosperity of the city can be attributed to its geographical position that tune with the principal communication and transportation channel between Italy and the Northern part of Europe.

The city is famous for its two annual sporting events – the Giro al Sas, which is a 10 km long professional street competition and the Giro del Trentino, which is an annual street cycling competition.

In order to get to Trento, car is one very comfortable option, thanks to the A22/E45 highway, which connects Trento with Verona to the South, and Innsbruck via Bolzano or Bozen to the North, and the SS47 highway that connects Trento with Padov.

Besides, there are train services, with the main railway lying between Italy and Austria and Germany. As the city is an old one, with narrow alleys and by lanes, hiring a car is not a very wise idea. The best way to look around the city is by bicycle and bike or by foot.

There are plenty to see in Trento, which the principle sites and places of attraction centered on the city center. The main attractions of the city are Piazza Duomo, which is a square lying at the very heart of the old city, Trento Cathedral, Castello del Buonconsiglio, which is a medieval castle, Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, which is a church from the era of renaissance, the Trentino natural science museum, and a string of Palazzi that are located all throughout the city center.

For the tourists, there are a number of shops selling artifacts and mementos, customary Italian handicrafts and other stuffs. For the foodies, there are a wide range of restaurants and cafes, bars and eateries that offer various famous Italian wines and other drinks, typical Italian and other continental cuisines prepared by some of the best chefs of Europe.

In short, if you are visiting Trento, it will be a trip that will not only satisfy you to the fullest, but will leave a permanent mark on your psyche – perhaps the mark of revisiting the history.
