Apulia

Italy's most beautiful color palette

There is something original and pure with the colors of Puglia. The white of the buildings, the roads and the almond blossoms; the blue-green from the hard to avoid sea; the silver-green olive trees and the red-brown of its land. Colors, and places, that fascinates.
Puglia, or Apulia as it is called in English, is the thin stiletto of Italy and this southern point marks the end of the mainland.

The North East of Puglia is dominated by the Gargano Peninsula which for its majority is a nature reserve. This coast is rocky, but very close to the coastal lakes Lesina and Varano. This area in the Gargano peninsula, with the “Foresta Umbra” and Tremiti islands, is protected in a special nature reserve. At the far end of the peninsula there are several nice beach resorts, including Rodi Garganico, Peschici and Vieste. Calcareous soil and hilly terrain makes conditions unfavorable for agriculture, but the olive and almond trees incredibly grow in crevices and the produce is delicious.

Tremiti islands outside the Gargano peninsula are Puglia’s own archipelago. Since 1989 the water around these islands is a marine reserve, and in 1995 they became part of the Gargano National Park. The largest island is called San Domino. The island’s coast is enriched of beautiful caves and water is crystalline. The smaller islands are called San Nicola, Capraia and Pianosa. Tremiti Islands are accessible by ferry from Termoli in Molise or Rodi Garganico in the Gargano.

Landscape nuances changes when you come to the Murge, the central part of Puglia. This is an incredible fertile soil where the most productivity of almonds, olives and grapes come from. It is from here that over 60% of Italian olive oil is produced. It is also in Murge we find any of the perhaps most characteristic of Puglia, Trulli houses. These cone-shaped houses are scattered over the countryside and the town of Alberobello is entirely dominated by this particular architecture. Another feature of the architecture of southern Italy is “La Masseria”. Masseria is initially rich man’s dwellings with the nature of a fortified farm. Within the walls, it can hide a whole labyrinth of buildings.

The southernmost part of Puglia is called Salento, and it’s a paradise for those who are interested in swimming and sunbathing. On this narrow strip that the Adriatic and Ionian Sea share the beach is never far away. Coast on the Ionian Sea is full of sandy beaches, while on the Adriatic coast is more rocky in nature. Here, you will find the pearl Gallipoli, whose cozy maze of houses are surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in Salento.
